What is Our Value?

Sean Small

This isn’t some random intrinsic thought that came to mind. Nope, this is something that popped into my head because of the recent NBA trade deadline coming and going. For those that don’t know, yesterday saw the most trades, involving the most teams, with the most players moved in the past 35 years (that’s according to Adrian Wojnarowski, so don’t think I am doing number crunching over here). My mindset on trades whether it’s the NFL, NBA, or any other professional sports league, has always been the same: it’s a business. It’s like I’m regurgitating what the athletes and media have continually said. Yes, it is a business, but today I started to think of these various trades in a new light. I started to think about how this would look in the real world.

There is no other industry in the world where you trade people within their profession. Could you imagine different restaurants trading servers, or lawyers being traded to different firms? Can you imagine partners huddled in a conference room finalizing a trade deal? “Yeah, I’ll take Jan for Sam and Erin, Jan’s shown to handle a greater caseload, but Sam and Erin definitely know how to settle out of court in a quicker manner.” While in typical industries your value is determined by your salary, being traded would really show where the higher ups in your company actually view your worth. Can you imagine being Sam or Erin in this situation? You are being valued as ½ of Jan. Jan on the other hand sees that she is worth two people, and can possibly negotiate that in her next contract negotiation (or more than likely her annual review).

This tactic in all industries might be an interesting concept to instill. Would the people being traded at a lower value increase output because of the new chip on their shoulder, or would they find their current status sufficient? Would the Jan’s of the world continue to push to increase their trade value, or will they crumble under their newly minted worth that has been deemed upon them? Obviously the professional leagues are different as players are traded due to expiring contracts, unwillingness to sign extensions with their current team, or a contender is just wanting to bolster its roster for a championship run. With that being said, it just made me think about what this would look like in the real world. Would our companies and businesses be more efficient if we worked on a contract basis with looming trade deadlines approaching? How would businesses change? I don’t know. If you have an opinion on this, I would love to chat about it, because I find it to be a pretty interesting hypothetical.

To conclude, I don’t really have the gumption to write much today. In all honesty, I didn’t have much to think about with this post today, as the current topics on my mind are still bringing light to stopping Asian Hate, trying to figure out how to combat voter suppression, and coming up with ways to actually stop these mass shootings from taking place so often in our country. So if there is anything I can say about our value as a nation, it is shown through fighting for social justice, equity, and every person having their voices heard. Our value is shown in combating white supremacy. Our value is shown through empathy. I hope you are all staying safe during these crazy times, and I hope you continue to fight for equality with everything you have. Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to you coming back to check out next week's post.
